Unix Web Hosting Services

Information Services and Technology (IST) provides several levels of web hosting services.

Effective 8/21/2007 new accounts are not available on the Arachne system.

Effective 8/21/2007 new Socrates accounts are limited to class accounts and accounts that need existing applications on Socrates. No new applications will be installed on Socrates.

Academic & Administrative Web Services:

• CalWeb Unix Basic Web Hosting Service - Arachne System (SunOS, Apache, CGI, perl, PHP, log statistics via web site). New accounts are not available on the arachne system as of 8/21/2007.
• CalWeb Unix Hostname Web Hosting Service - Socrates System (SunOS, Apache, public_html with domain name, no log statistics) - For topics and departments. If you only need a web site (and not other Unix applications) IST recommends using the CalWeb Unix Basic or Professional web hosting service instead.
• CalWeb Unix Userid Web Hosting Service - Socrates System (SunOS, Apache, public_html, no log statistics) - This service has web site names of the form "socrates.berkeley.edu/~userid". If you need a small web site (300 MB max.) for individual use, IST recommends using the Cal WebFiles service instead.

Enterprise Unix Services:

• CalWeb Unix Professional Web Hosting Service (SunOS, Apache, CGI, perl, PHP, Python, C, MoinMoinWiki, AWStats)
• CalWeb Unix WebFarm Web Hosting Service (SunOS, Apache, CGI, perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Tomcat, Java, C, MoinMoinWiki, AWStats)

Various Unix shells (bash , csh, sh, tcsh, etc.) are available.

Database Services for Web Hosting

Basic MySQL and other database solutions are available on a separate platform.

Other IST Web Hosting Services

• bSpace (web sites for courses: IST Partnership with ETS Learning Systems)
• Cal WebFiles (for individuals: public_html, Web & WebDAV file sharing, no CGI or log statistics, 300MB max. storage space)
• CalWeb IIS Web Hosting Service (IIS 6, ASP, ASP.NET, FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, MSSQL Database, Access Database, Server Sides Includes, Web Site Statistics
