How to access your account
Arachne System Logins
The two primary methods of accessing the Arachne System are via secure terminal login to a Unix shell or a secure file transfer login.
- Remote shell (terminal) access: Users must use an SSH capable application to make a terminal
login to their CalWeb Unix web account. There is no telnet access to the
CalWeb Unix Web servers. You may connect via a Internet
Service Provider (ISP) or the campus dial-up modem pool. The system internet hostname
is:
arachne.berkeley.edu (169.229.131.109)
and is also known as:
recluse.berkeley.edu
spider.berkeley.edu and
tarantula.berkeley.edu
- Remote Secure File Transfer: Users may connect using Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
login from any campus network or internet connected host to transfer files. SSH2 Secure Shell copying (scp) is also supported.
How to Access the Arachne System
- Via an AirBears, campus dial-up or direct connection on a core campus data
network subnet having IP addresses beginning with 128.32., 169.229. or 136.152.
- Use: workstation internet connection software and
SSH2 capable client software.
- Via a non-core campus network connection or other internet connection.
- Use: workstation internet connection software
Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software and
SSH2 capable client software.
Note: Use of VPN on low-speed dial-up connections can be very
slow. For connections from off-campus IST recommends using
a high-speed internet connection such as DSL or cable modem
connection.
Access Requirements
Effective 11 July 2007 at 3pm the following requirements must be met to access the Arachne System:
- An active internet connection (campus or non-campus).
- The internet connection must be using an IP address that
has a internet Domain Name Service (DNS) PTR record so it can
pass a reverse IP address verification test.
- If connection does not have an IP address being with
128.32., 169.229. or 136.152 or does not have a DNS PTR record,
VPN must be used to map originating IP address to a UC Berkeley
campus network one with a DNS PTR record.
- Using client software that is capable of using the
SSH2 secure shell protocol for a secure terminal or file transfer
(SFTP or scp) connection.
